When I started playing competitive RBY (on NetBattle) everyone was friendly. Then we all moved to using PO and still, people playing RBY were friendly. As I experimented with other gens I noticed that things that a bit more crude, and the newer the gen the worse it got. I've since seen this creeping into RBY more and more. Now I can barely go a game without people calling me "gaytard" or telling me to "fuck off" or whatever. Rather than encouraging and giving advice to new players people now just say "looooool" (or considerably worse) whenever they make a mistake. Am I alone in noticing this?
I suppose it's a consequence of more people playing the game, which is a good thing, but I really hate it. It's just rude and I wish there was some way to report people like this and have them (temporarily) banned. I know this is the internet and all, but why can't people just be nice to each other? It's so shocking to have such a wonderful community fall into a pit of personal insults.
Just to clarify I'm not against swearing or pointing out mistakes, it just feels the standards have fallen so far from what they were. Saying "fuck me that was lucky" is very different to saying "you fucking retard", for example. Some people might not care but it's really hampering my enjoyment of RBY and I'm sick of it.
Anyone else experiencing this? Should I ditch PO? Is there any way to get my lovely community back? Some people may not care, but I'm sick of other players being arseholes.

netbattle is still nice I started it a couple of days ago. Newer gens communities can be nice although that's generally less true on pokemon online.. in xy ubers our community I mean it can be bad at times but we're trying to cut down on it in our room on showdown, whilst we generally get on okay at the top, I think cos it is a bigger community you split into friend groups a bit more.. some people swear, some people don't but I find within ubers at least that the best in the game at least don't actually cuss or shittalk in the match or after even though we have a lot of divisions over how we see the tier (XY Ubers is arguably (but definitely in my opinion) a cancerous metagame, what with shadow tag, geomancy, and baton pass running about, so it's not a suprise that the way we feel about the tier, or build in it) but umm basically newer generation communities can be nicer, it sorta depends. Some tiers don't really have what you would call communities. Either way I've not had issues with the RBY community at any point. Whenever I've battled everyone's been graceful about hax.

I don't play a lot on the ladder but generally speaking I don't see the same issue as you do when playing RBY. However you can indeed report flamers. Take a screenshot, save the log and PM a server moderator (check who is online by writing /auth).

I don't think it's that terrible. I do give advice, but I consider it somewhat dishonourable to give advice during a non-practice game (ie, during a ladder match, or if they challenged me). I say something to the effect of "do you want some pointers after we finish?" or some such.

I disagree. I got the Best Mentor award on Pokemon Perfect specifically because so many people thought it was so nice of me to give pointers even when unasked for.

omg gaytards just deal with it looooool
Generally people who do this are terribad at RBY. I have a hard time being bothered by people that much worse than me (except if they're actually beating me for some reason, in which case they probably aren't complaining that much).

I just wait until the battle is over before giving them, and let people refuse help if they are determined not to learn. And I don't really give a fuck whether people like you more than me because of it. I offer help because I like helping people and I think it's the right thing to do, not because I want accolades.

I think you get more upset with this kind of thing when you value yourself too highly in the game, which is kind of natural if you find it relatively easy against most opponents you face in some tier. I agree the problem is worse in newer gens, which is why I like the old gens so much.
I think giving a bit of advice, that is genuinely agreed on by the majority of veteran players is alright. It might upset some people who think they know it all, but maybe they'll appreciate it when thinking back.
I'd say borat and t3h Icy are/were a bit over the top though for a lot of people, saying some useful agreed upon stuff and then saying stuff just to get an argument going maybe. borat is actually very good at gsc at least, whereas t3h Icy's skill in RBY didn't seem particularly impressive.

If you're implying that I am only being nice specifically because I want awards on a website I rarely post on and whose tournaments I rarely participate in, then I strongly advice you to rethink your position. Either way. I do agree that people throwing random curses around are usually not the best players in general - there are of course exceptions of brilliant but big mouthed XY/BW players trying their hand at RBY and failing miserably, but those are in the minority. People who sling insults can fairly safely be ignored in general and I'm not usually very helpful versus them either.

No, I'm not implying that. You were implying that about me. I do give advice, but I consider it somewhat dishonourable to give advice during a non-practice game (ie, during a ladder match, or if they challenged me). Your award would only help to convince me that your policy is better if my policy was intended to win awards; otherwise it's irrelevant. As such, by mentioning it, you implied that my policy was intended to win awards. More generally, "I am nicer than you" is one of the most narcissistic and insulting claims imaginable, and scorn is all it deserves.

Right. That wasn't my intention - what I wanted to say was that I don't think it hurts or is rude to offer pointers during the game, even if it's a ladder game or if I was being challenged. My bad.

I honestly can't think of one negative experience I've had playing this gen, and the way advice is given is more important than whether it's solicited or not or when it takes place

Apology accepted. I don't think it's rude per se; I dunno, to some extent I feel like it's not taking the ladder or the challenge seriously. But I have a really weird sense of honour, so it's not like I mind if other people do it differently.

I don't think it's that terrible. Well there's a subtle distinction between saying "lol" when someone makes a mistake and saying "looooooooooool!! Moron" and rubbing it in when you're playing against someone who is clearly in one of their first games. Personally I wouldn't do either, but there is a difference. Also part of the point of the initial post was to see if I am over-sensitive. I think I probably am to an extent considering this is the internet and overall behaviour is still pretty good. I just feel the standard is slipping with time.

There's also a distinction between mistakes in general and specifically overpredictions. Like, if Rhydon Earthquakes vs. Chansey as I bring in Exeggutor, or if Exeggutor Explodes vs. Chansey as I bring in Gengar, I won't say "lol". But if Rhydon Body Slams Chansey (expecting Exeggutor/Starmie) and I Counter for an OHKO, I will say "lol". I'll also say "lol" if Tauros Blizzards my Chansey (expecting a switch to GolDon) and I Thunder Wave it for free.
