Actually I didn't need to land the sleep, as we had 5 pokemon each (his ones were crippled: Jynx, Snorlax and Golem), and I had para'd Chansey. I was ahead, and I could've used Explosion myself against Golem, removing Golem itself or the incoming Jynx once and for all (didn't even need that as Jynx was in range). I planned the double switch hoping he would've boomed at some point, and against Exeggutor he was kind of forced to. We both misplayed imo, and it went against me. Basically Golem booming on Exeggutor was a fair settlement as I would've lost more, but I was ahead so that would've been okaish.

I think that if a player is ahead simplifying is almost always correct. On the contrary, the ones behind should try to keep as many Pokemon on the field as possible and go for risks. Steady plays might close the gap but Pokemon is binary - you win or you lose. It is highly unlikely that standard plays will allow you to win. I believe that this was an example of just that. Exploding with Golem on either Snorlax or Exeggutor would still leave me in a bad spot. That's why I went for the risky double prediction and it worked out for me.
Likewise do I think that Marco using Psychic over Explosion was fine despite being the incorrect option in the actual game. A risk was needed to turn it around.

Great game, I remember this (how couldn't I?)... Watching the game back, I like the way I threw Chansey into Starmie: basically I wanted to deny Recover. Had he used it, I would've healed my Chansey. So, we ended the stall phase and I think I was in the best position I could (given that Chansey was owned by Zapdos).
I would sacrifice Snorlax again. Tauros outsped Zapdos: it was a fine switch on Drill Peck maybe. Lapras was my win condition against the rest. My egg was the main answer against his one, and it could've killed Starmie with Explosion like Snorlax does (unless full HP); mainly it was able to survive 2 Starmie's Blizzards or a CH one (Snorlax couldn't). Egg was a good switch as we know Raish used TBolt, but it would've died for nothing in case of Drill Peck.
Hyper Beam from egg was about 50% to KO Starmie, and yeah, it's really rarely used over Explosion.
