8 person entry cap standard rules.
Single elimanation best of 1 or best of three players discretion.
Matches will be played on the standard RBY2K10 server arena-trap.zapto.org.
Signups end in two weeks. If it's under 6 people I'll do round robin.

Once we get two more I'll close sign-ups. Would anyone mind if I just did this with six? I'm eager to get this started.

If it's six I guess you'll be making round robin, so we will get this done a lot earlier if we wait for 2 more imo.

Single elim is super lame.

I have no idea how double elim works. If I really wanted to use something I understood we'd all be playing modified swiss cutting to top 2. Now that I think of it has anyone here ever used swiss pairings in a tournament?

If we have 8, go double elim. If not, do a round robin. It'll take forever, but who really cares at this point?

And why is swiss not an option I wonder? as no one has mentioned anything about it other than me?

Swiss is......weak. If we have 8+ people, double elimination is the way to go, with appropriate seeding if byes or play-in rounds are necessary. Below 8, it's Round Robin. I mean, I guess we could use swiss instead of double elimination for a large number of players. The advantage is it allows everyone to play the full number of rounds. The disadvantage is it's not exciting. Also the entire tournament runs a greater risk of getting held up by people not getting their battles done. And there are a lot more battles to not get done in swiss than in double elimination. And anything under 8, round robin is vastly superior to swiss.
Also single elimination sucks and best of 1 is absolutely ridiculous. This is RBY, for crying out loud.
Our (good) options so far are: *Standard double elimination. All games are best of 3 except for the finals, which are best of 5. *Standard round robin. All games are best of 3. *Standard round robin, all games best of 3, except afterwards the top two players battle it out for an exciting final round, best of 5. *Some other variation of round robin or double elimination.
I support double elimination if we have 8+, round robin+finals otherwise.

Curious about seeding, btw. I'm gonna prove my noobness here but I'm planning on random due to the fact it's not offical in anyway. Thanks garrin I'll plan on double elim if I get 8 or RR+finals. due to the fact we have 6 already I'll wait for 5 days to see if anyone else joins. BTW if anyone would be as so kind as to PM about tournament hosting to help me out I would be quite grateful.

Random seeding is disastrous - ask for help with seeding instead.

If it's six, we can always do a first round, then a round robin with the 3 winners.

Seeding is not hard.
If you do byes, you give the best people byes. If you do a play-in round, you give the worst(or newest) people the play-in round(effectively giving everyone else a bye).
If I were to rank the people that have joined so far in seeding order, I'd go: Crystal, Isa, Me, Jorgen, Cheese, You, in that order. So if you need two people to get byes, for example, you'd give them to Crystal and Isa.
Seeding is useful even if you don't have byes, since it saves the intense battles for later, and makes sure a great player doesn't get eliminated before a mediocre one simply due to bracket luck(of course, regular in-battle luck can still accomplish this).
In that case, something WW and Icy have done in the past is to rank people in tiers rather than give individual seeds. Check out some of our previous tournaments for how this works. This reduces the amount of "Why am I ranked below ______?" copmplaints, which can be helpful. In that case, you'd go 1st seed, and 2nd seed. For example, say Nerd and David join. You'd do 1st seed: Crystal, Garrin Red, Isa, Nerd (notice the alphabetical order) and 2nd seed: Cheese, David, Jorgen, Redemption. With this kind of seeding, the actual positions are randomized. All we know is that in the first round, each 1st seed plays a 2nd seed.
Of course, Round Robin eliminates the need for seeding entirely. But it's only practical for small number of players.

As of now, in my opinion:
1st seed: Crystal Isa
2nd seed: Jorgen Garrin Red (jorgen has better placements than you, Garrin, and beat you in your latest OU set - still in the same tier, but there's honestly probably a case for Jorgen > Isa)
3rd seed: Cheese redemption
New participants are added where deemed to fit. Randomly seed top seeds against bottom seeds and second seeds versus third seeds. If you want Double Elimination for 6 players, give top seeds an initial Bye and let second seeds face third seeds.

Hence the case for Jorgen > Isa =p
Three straight second places in other metas is decent compensation though. I'd say it's a tossup, to be honest.

I suggest this:
Crystal vs BYE
Garrin Red vs redemption
Isa vs BYE
Jorgen vs Cheese

Meh, as far I'm concerned you can just do whatever. I dunno why it needs to merit such a debate. On the other hand I appreciate that being a lower ranked player means it makes little difference to me!

The debate on the organization of this tourney is getting kinda silly imo. It seems like people are hell-bent on complicating what should just be a fun little tourney.
On Swiss: It would be a really bad idea for pokemon. It's generally hard enough to get sets played as it is, now you want to add the possibility of people just not caring in the later rounds, too?
Let's not complicate this little tourney with a round robin (we don't need games that don't "matter"). However, make it double elimination so it's not stupidly short. For seeding, WW's bracket is good.
