Tbolt on Gengar is more for letting it check Waters, imo. The damage against normals is pretty paltry even with Tbolt.

i mean, i realize drain helps gengar explode, but he's got to do more than just sleep something and explode. In half the games I've played where my opponent has a Gengar, all it does is sleep something, take sleep, and die trying to take Egg's Explosion. In the other half, it sleeps something, switches into Slowbro and gets off 2 Thunderbolts before being obliterated by +4 Psychic (or +2 if it's already taken damage). More seriously, normals don't care about Tbolt much more than they care about Night Shade and the switch out is eased by Gengar's whole "your STAB doesn't hurt me" schtick. Rhydon cares a lot more about Mega Drain than Night Shade and can mindlessly STAB Gengar. The big advantage of Thunderbolt is that you can zap Starmie and Lapras, but on the other hand Gengar is afraid of Psychic Starmie whether it has Thunderbolt or not. I'm not sure I follow this logic. Exeggutor doesn't get Body Slam and Gengar doesn't usually use it.

T1: Eggy vs. Gengar T2: Snorlax vs. Chansey
That's how you get free Body Slams.
I think Night Shade is great simply because it hits Eggy. While Mega Drain is awesome against Rocks, you'll find yourself very rarely in that matchup, since Gengar cannot switch in safely ever, bar a very risky prediction...only to get a non-STAB Mega Drain.

Gengar. Wrap is gay.
For our correct RBY my favorite poke is Snorlax.

Everything does. =p Expand your thoughts please. Well, I suppose this is ironically an argument for Tbolt Gar, but Gar tends to draw the powerful Egg/Lapras and Rhydon/Lapras matchups and draw Quakes for Articuno.

i know you guys wanna hate, but gengar's tbolt crits for 200+ on both snorlax and tauros, and gengar crits 21.48% of the time! personally i've seen that difference impact my games moar than i've seen rocks get drained... although i suppose it's pretty hard to measure how many games the fear of drain impacts, and i do realize that's a good enough reason to run a move at least sometimes.
well, i guess i have a curiosity question for the haters - supposing tbolt had no SE coverage, and psychic didn't exist, would you always run drain?
oh and i guess there's cray but let's pretend it doesn't exist @_@
