What were your other moves? I thought BSlam/HBeam/TBolt were all standard.

Well Beam is definitely there, and if I had to hazard a guess the 4th would be Bslam rather than Tbolt, although the latter makes for that Gyarados set everyone and their mother used before they bothered to be try-hards about competitive Pokemon like us.

I think you can get away with any combination of the moves BSlam/TBolt/Blizzard, depending on what you wanna hit, but I think BSlam is the clearly best option. TBolt allows you to hit waters, Blizzard hits Eggy/Zapdos. I think that BSlam is a great option against the waters in general (and Starmie specifically), so Thunderbolt isn't absolutely needed.

i'm currently running bslam/hydro pump/hbeam/blizzard and feel like they're important in around that order...

body slam is there to hit switches coz otherwise gyarados is just a super mediocre special attacker who doesn't do much in my experience.

i think blizzard and a stab move are both needed to threaten eggy and physicals respectively (i often switch into EQ and wouldn't want to use gyarados w/o a rock or gengar). i think having a water move (not just blizzard) is just as important vs. rocks as normals coz he's weak to rock slide and blizz doesn't ohko. oh and also gengar, who loves to switch in and threaten tbolt, barely cares abt taking one blizz (22-26%). i prefer hydro pump to surf atm coz it 3hkos lax and i just don't rly think gyarados is good enough to win games with surf... if i miss twice instead, well, i guess it wasn't my day to win w/ NUs, lol

hbeam helps w/ chansey and zam (who are on like every team). chansey aside, being able to paraslam zam (36-42%) and then oneshot w/ hbeam (63-75%) already makes me want hbeam especially when i have a team of NUs that all struggle w/ zam coz none of them resist psychic. but it also is pretty ridic vs. chansey (49-58%)...

i ran tbolt for a while and absolutely hated it - in general, i want to body slam waters as they switch in and then switch out, so it didn't ever rly help me win.

i don't want to stay in on starmie or lapras coz they both do like 80% back if they run tbolt. if starmie's paralyzed and in tbolt range (42-50%), it's also in hbeam range (43-51%), so i think it's pretty redundant there. lapras is too tanky to often be in tbolt range (30-36%) and i don't want to get hit after so i don't see the point there either.

so i guess it came down to blizzard for eggy or tbolt for slowbro, and i see a lot moar eggy than slowbro. so ya, that's why i'm using that set

I've never really understood gyara as a competitive pokemon. What's its role in a team?

Mixed attacker. Gets in on an Earthquake from Rhydon or Snorlax and starts wailing away at things with STAB Pumps or Body Slams.

Anyhoo that's about the reasoning I'd take with Gyara's set, lilith. Except for Egg vs. Slowbro, because while Slowbro is definitely less common in tourney play, he's kind of all the rage on ladder. In the end I'd say Tbolt makes things easier against Slowbro than Blizzard does against Egg, although I'd probably be more willing to leave Gyara in to Blizz Egg than to Tbolt Bro because neither really threatens to kill with conventional attacks (Egg can Boom, but Gyara for Egg is a fair trade imo) and Bro is more likely to paralyze me in return. Still, being able to fish for crits when you need them is nice, and depending on your team you can have Egg pretty worn down by the time Gyara comes in.

Same as Lapras, but much stronger physical moves, less reliable special moves (you're either giving up power or typing/accuracy), and a lot less bulk.

I've used Gyarados a lot - probably the most of anyone here - and I can safely assure you, it's not something you add to your team because it's better at a specific role than another Pokémon. Lapras is almost always superior with STAB Blizzard, better bulk and typing, and the ability to run multiple sets, giving it unpredictability. It does hit decently hard on switches with 348 attack and a base 120 STAB move that's the strongest commonly seen special move in RBY, only second to Articuno's Blizzard, but it's crippled by paralysis and dies to Thunderbolt in two hits if it isn't STAB and one hit if it is.
So, you use it because it is cool.

Well, the most memorable experience I've had with Gyarados was beating one with a Starmie that had neither Thunder Wave nor Thunderbolt.

(It was in Ubers, and the guy was clearly a noob with no Mewtwo or Mew.)

my experience has generally been that w/o a way to really threaten eggy (body slam does 20% while blizzard does 40%) the game doesn't even really reach the part where i get swept by slowbro >_>

but this could be specific to using a team with multiple NUs (without psychic resistance) - i could see how it matters less on an otherwise normal team
