A few pointers on prediction.

Okay, so I played this game (g1 of the buy-your-team tournament) and ALLALA looked like a total doofus for most of it because I was one step ahead of a lot of his predictions. I didn't really want to give advice to a tournament opponent while playing them, but now we're in a lull, so I'll give a postmortem now - I think it highlights some of the keys to masterful play and how NOT to use predictions.
Most people who run Gengar do this when they see a Starmie lead. It's a bad habit. The odds in this matchup are 53:47 in Starmie's favour, and that 53% is a KO, not just a sleep. It can be worth it if your team absolutely NEEDS Starmie out of the way (ie, if you're running Slowbro; Cloyster's still walled by a sleeping Starmie thanks to Clamp's mechanics and Rocks only really need it paralysed and don't frequently sweep anyway), but otherwise it's a high-risk, low-reward gamble.
I have no clue what I was doing here. I shouldn't have sent Rhydon into a Gengar that has no reason not to Mega Drain, and I shouldn't have tried to predict the switch to Egg (I'd forgotten that Mega Drain restores health and was thinking Rock Slide would KO anyway; classy, I know). Conversely, Gengar should usually be Mega Draining if it carries it and it's not being forced into another move. Getting back above half gives you a cushion for failed predictions (and those are going to happen - it's Gengar), and Rhydon switches into Thunderbolt steal an enormous amount of momentum.
I don't really know what he was expecting. But Egg's pretty standard IMO with my sleep not yet thrown.
Turn 5 I used Psychic predicting a switch to Gengar to take the sleep. I predicted wrong, but it didn't matter because he brings out Zapdos instead. I'm guessing he was predicting Sleep Powder and wanted to take it with Zapdos since I had Rhydon (I didn't recognise this at the time). There's three problems here; 1) since I haven't seen Zapdos yet, I might sacrifice Rhydon; as such it's not totally useless yet, 2) a switch to sleep-bait is telegraphed with Tauros active vs. unparalysed full-health Egg, because most players baby their Tauroi - and I don't absolutely have to pull the trigger yet, since Psychic does good damage and I'll probably get a second chance, 3) the double-switch back out, once that prediction failed, is also telegraphed, because an active Zapdos with a known Rhydon in play is the most obvious lure in the entire game.
Decent players predict. Really good players think - what motives does my opponent have to do that? Does my opponent have a motive to do something else? Is he analysing my motives? How badly could this go wrong? Here, he has an obvious motive to bring Gengar in - it's pretty much the best thing to have asleep, as it still forces mindgames around Explosion, and here it's severely damaged to boot - which in turn gives me a motive to pick it off for free and sleep something else. And failing to see this cost him extremely dearly, both in losing Egg's Explosion, and in showing Zapdos - the latter being, in fact, the more important, as we'll see later.
Bringing Chansey in on Egg (or Gengar) is always suspicious, because it is so perfect an Explosion target. With a known Gengar in play, it is no longer "suspicious". It's more along the lines of this:
As such, I throw Stun Spore. I have two obvious motives here, and one he doesn't know about yet:
1) I have a known Rhydon, and his Exeggutor is asleep. Paralysed Chansey is potentially a goldmine for me - and my Starmie is also asleep, removing the main benefit I'd get from freezing it. As such, I don't need to avoid paralysing it, and a para trade (which is what happens if he stays in, most likely) puts me at less chance of getting haxed out of Explosion than just Psychicing it.
2) If he brings Gengar in and it's paralysed, its major remaining utility to him - fast Explosion - is denied as surely as if I'd Psychiced it.
3) (SPOOKY SECRET) I have Slowbro. And it doesn't have Thunder Wave. Paralysing anything with Thunderbolt or Explosion removes major headaches for me later.
But he brings in Golem attempting to take the Explosion. This shows yet another of his cards to me when he doesn't need to show it, which puts him at yet more of an informational disadvantage - he's now shown his full team of Gengar/Chansey/Exeggutor/Golem/Zapdos/Tauros while I've only shown him three Pokemon (Starmie, Rhydon, Exeggutor). If he'd brought Gengar back in and gotten it killed by mistake, I might have been more easily tricked into Exploding on a hidden second Normal resist - remind anyone of the Double Electric strategy? But now I know everything - I know all his motives, and can predict him better than he can predict me. And I've just crippled yet another of his Pokemon for no cost. Another high-risk gamble that didn't pay off.
On the other hand, if he's giving Chansey to me on a silver platter, I'll take the trade. Exploding Exeggutor, even at full health, is worth taking Chansey out of the game; his Golem is not nearly as deadly when paralysed. I pretty much knew he was staying in once I successfully Stunned it, but one Psychic guarantees the KO.
Fatal Explosions are breaks in the game's flow; they give each player a chance to lead something new, but without knowing what the opponent has in store. Sleepers/sleep baits are obvious if you haven't thrown/taken sleep yet, but both sleeps have been thrown; as such, the list of "new leads" becomes much larger - Snorlax is a prime candidate because nothing (well, Clamp Cloyster, but this tournament is no-wrap) can capitalise on the matchup and gain control of the game, as is Tauros because it CAN capitalise on so many matchups. A paralysed Golem isn't so crash-hot. Even its Explosion won't reliably stop a rout.
Earthquake's a 3HKO, so I expected Explosion on the first or second turn and didn't really want to lose Snorlax. Full-para made it somewhat moot. Keeping Golem in against a Snorlax that outspeeds it wasn't very smart, though - if it had had Surf, Golem could easily have been denied Explosion.
The double-switch is nice, sure, but what does it accomplish? Tauros is slightly less chipped, but it's still 2HKOed by most things at 70%. Seems an unnecessary risk.
And this is where his earlier mistake in showing Zapdos really, really hits home. I know, now, that he wants to kill Rhydon, and as such I can absolutely shred him by exploiting that motive. What should have been a favourable situation for him - Tauros active vs. Rhydon - turns into a 2-1 trade in my favour because I know he's trying to snipe Rhydon and predict accordingly.
We're in the endgame now. He has a chipped Zapdos, a sleeping Egg, and a chipped, paralysed Golem; I have a fresh Chansey, fresh Rhydon, sleeping Starmie, and hidden Slowbro. Chansey minimises the chance of him waking Egg if he sends that out, and usually beats Zapdos; if he goes for Golem, at least I don't risk getting Rhydon Earthquaked (his Golem isn't in guaranteed OHKO range).
He booms, Egg doesn't wake, and I clean up with Rhydon. Simple enough.
So yeah, that's the game. I hope my musings on information control and the need for context in prediction prove helpful.
