A simple formula: take the proportion of a Pokemon's chance to get a Critical Hit, add 1 and then multiply it by Attack/Special. What this does is gives a "damage rating" based on a Pokemon's ability to score Critical Hits. In other words, it gives a more accurate rating for average damage.
So for Zapdos which has a ~19.5% CH Rate, I multiplied his Attack and Special by 1.195 since the damage Zapdos does is always 1x, but 19.5% of the time, it does 100% extra damage (CH).
Anyway, just a fun number to take a look at. One particular is Jolteon does more damage on average than Magneton, despite having 20 less Special.

doesn't count stab though right? cause I know tauros does more damage than dragonite with normal moves.

It's general Physical/Special damage and doesn't take things such as Type, STAB or moves into consideration.

But a CH is not exactly 2x the damage.

At level 100 it is.
EDIT: Excluding rounding which may make 1 point differences.

Crit =/= 2x damage on netbattle. It's possible netbattle is wrong, but even if it is you should use the NB damage formula unless you're playing offline.

Criticals are most certainly not 2x while playing Little Cup (it actually seems more like 1.5x). Guess levels do factor into the calculations.

The correct formula simply uses 2 as a multiplier for critical hits (which otherwise is 1), and level is only used at the start of the damage formula.
Netbattle's formula is wrong. Regardless, the information above is correct for 100s.

Critical hits are 1.94ish times as strong as regular attacks for most Pokémon around level 100. Try it out on a calculator, it'll always be a lot closer to x1.94 than to x2.00. If you use x1.94 for crit damage, the faster Pokémon move back down a bit, ex. your list goes "Jolteon, Haunter, Exeggutor, Magneton", but "Exeggutor, Jolteon, Magneton, Haunter" is more accurate.

Netbattle is a bit faulty with that. It's 2x in-game, Stadium and everywhere else.

The critical hit modifier comes before you round, doesn't it? The modifier itself is x2, but the damage shouldn't be exactly x2 unless I've misunderstood something.

Post by t3h Icy on Jul 21, 2011 12:57:25 GMT -8
It depends on how much the damage before hand is. If the damage up to that point is 34.99999, the 2x will be 69, not 70, which is 1.97x, but if you do exactly 40 damage, the 2x is 80.
Rounding isn't what's glitchy, the level gets involved with how much damage CHs do for some reason on Netbattle.

I think I'm missing or misunderstanding something, so I'm gonna go back to the damage formula. I'm using the one that's in RJones's GameFAQs guide which I assume (?) is correct.
int((min(int(int(((2 + int(0.4 * L)) * A * P) / D) / 50) , 997) + 2) * X)
We can plug in L and knock out the min function and X (which should have no effect on the ratio between crits and non crits) and a couple int functions so it simplifies to
int(int(42 AP/D)/50) + 2
For a critical hit it becomes
int(int(82 AP/D)/50) + 2
(as, according to RJones's guide, the critical hit mod doubles "L") which is less than 2x as big.
Suppose a Pokémon with 300 attack uses Earthquake on a Pokémon with 250 defense. A standard hit does 103 and a critical hit does 199, only about 1.93 times as powerful.
This is what I mean when I say crits are not quite 2x as strong. Am I making a mistake somewhere?

That doesn't look right to me, but that might be how Netbattle works. Criticals work perfectly fine in Stadium and in-game, by just multiplying by 2 at the end.

What is your source Icy?
Unless there has been a new discovery recently, CHes double the level in every gen up until DP.
From Kamex's guide:
H1. Critical Hits; If a damaging move scores a critical hit, damage from the move will be calculated using twice the user's level as well as the user's and opponent's original stats. Because of this, critical hits ignore Reflect, Light Screen, all stat modifiers (including the attack reduction due to burn), and stat changes due to Transform.

Yup, after a ton of tests, that one is right, lol. Like most people probably were, I was under the impression Criticals do 2x and noticed that I misread the formula when I first found it.
The numbers and ordering are still pretty accurate for L100s, but I'll update this (and tons of other things) when I can.

That kind of reminds me - we should get Jolt / R Jones / Sadistic Mystic over here. He's been largely missing from the R/B/Y boards on GameFAQs for quite some time, although he does (rarely) post on the Stadium board.
You guys should check out his Pokemon Stadium videos on Youtube if you haven't already. They're the kind of thing that'll surprise you (such as him using 6 level 5 Pokemon to defeat 3 level 100s...)

You're both right. In gens 2-5, a CH does x2 the level, but since there is no addition/subtraction after that multiplication, it may as well be a x2 on the very outside of the problem. The reason it's different in RBY is that addition (+2) happens after the CH is applied.
|
|
|
Post by hipmonlee on Jul 29, 2011 14:22:18 GMT -8
That's not right. In gsc and advance the formula is more or less the same as rby (obviously it includes items andmaybe some other new mechanics). In DP it changed to make ches double damage, but the +2 after the level still exists. Also where the CH is calculated affects rounding, since it is all done in integers.
|
|
|
Post by WaterWizard on Jul 29, 2011 14:30:06 GMT -8
Yes. If this is the formula for GSC (and advance?), int(int(int(2×L ÷ 5+2)×A×P ÷ D)/50), then I am right in saying there is no addition after the CH is applied. Thus, the x2 could be on the very outside.
Except, you are correct in that I neglected to considering rounding.

(2×L ÷ 5+2)
Also is that second +2 excluded from gsc and advance? I dont think that it is. Though I am not 100%. I couldnt find mention of it in RJones's guide.

I also have an overall list but, as I've mentioned before, I need to work through the mathematics again to explain to myself how it works. It's not a simple average--it gives more weight to Pokémon who hit extremely hard on one side (which I think is reasonable--a Pokémon with Alakazam's stats is likely more dangerous than one with Mew's stats).
