Tier: OU
General Bio:
Exeggutor is incredible. Due to wonderful defensive typing, this pokemon can resist and wall a number of pokemon, many common to OU. Exeggutor can sleep, stun, seed, explode, and even rest off damage. With 348 special, Exeggutor takes hits like a champ and dishes out powerful STAB Psychic and Mega Drain. Considered the very best by some, and at least near the top by the rest, Eggy is seen on most competitive teams.
Movesets:
"Smogon Sleep/Stun Eggy"
Sleep Powder, Stun Spore, Psychic, Explosion
This set has been common for a number of years and has been characterized by its frequent use by newbs from Smogon, and for good reason. The set is reliable and effective. Sleep one pokemon, Stun the next, and dish out powerful STAB as needed. Explode to end with dignity.
"Leech Seed Eggy"
Leech Seed, Stun Spore, Rest, Psychic
This set is more advanced and requires great skill to use. One should pair this Eggy with a Rest Lapras and perhaps a Chansey, too, to maximize efficiency. The premise is simple: seed and paralyze an enemy Chansey, Snorlax, or Alakazam, and proceed to batter with Psychic. Rest when needed, and repeat. You can retreat to Lapras if an Ice Beam KO is incoming, and fight from that side. This Exeggutor is very tag-team oriented, so be prepared for a lot of switching. The benefit is that you can effectively beat the opponent's stallers this way, as you will be damaging with Leech Seed while sleeping and switching.
Alternative Options:
-Mega Drain is often used in place of Stun Spore for the standard set. It hits Golem and Rhydon very hard and takes a lot of HP back which can be quite game changing if it is used when they switch in expecting Explosion. It also hits Starmie and Lapras decently and can take a lot of HP from a Chansey whose special has fallen.
-Double-Edge deals nice damage due to Eggy's 288 attack, and the recoil is not too harmful.
-Reflect can catch an exploding Snorlax or Genar by surprise and can help against Zapdos. Tauros circumvents with Blizzard.
-Mimic can be useful when paired with Psychic and Reflect, to get Recover from Zam, but this only works well on NBS.
-Stomp can flinch in a pinch.
-Solar Beam pairs well with Sunny Day to fully utilize Eggy's 348 special attack... JK! Trolled ya!
Counters:
Because Eggy can explode, it can be difficult to truly counter him. However, safe bets are Articuno, Jynx, and Lapras, as well as Zapdos. Chansey does a good job, but she is easy to switch into unlike some of the other counters. Alakazam can stall fairly well but wastes his precious Psychic PP in the process.
It is notable that three pokemon, Dodrio, Aerodactyl, and Moltres can 1HKO Exeggutor, by use of Sky Attack, though high rolls are needed. Zapdos can 2HKO with Drill Peck, or 1HKO with a CH. And, though rarely seen, Bug and Fire attacks can of course do powerful damage to Exeggutor, though none can 1HKO without a CH, save for a max roll x5 Pin Missile from Beedril.
Team Role:
Exeggutor provides great bulk to teams. Many attacks are sponged, notably Ground, Psychic, and Electric, and due to Eggy's bulk he is actually one of the few pokemon who can pull off Rest realistically. A reliable sleep move and the ability to spread paralysis make Exeggutor a good statician, too. Strong special attacks and a powerful Explosion mean Exeggutor is also a mixed sweeper. The threat of Explosion plays a powerful part in the metagame and can help force switches and create other opportune situations for whoever is using him. There is no doubt that Exeggutor is one of the foremost pokemon in competitive RBY.
