General Bio:
Snorlax is a powerhouse. This pokemon strikes fear in the fainthearted due to his sheer physical strength. With powerful STAB normal attacks and type coverage through Earthquake, Snorlax can be a thorn in the side of many opponents. And besides that, Snorlax has a pretty wide movepool, allowing him to change things up to give a surprise edge to the team. Snorlax' low speed can be make him tough to get moving, but with good support he can sweep quite efficiently. Considered a staple by many, Snorlax will surely cause your foe some pain.
Movesets:
"Phys-Lax"
Body Slam, Hyper Beam, Earthquake, Selfdestruct
This set is generally considered standard for Snorlax. It allows him to hit everyone hard and finish with a bang. Snorlax can Body Slam everyone except Gengar, Rocks, and a Counter Chansey, in which case he uses Earthquake. Hyper Beam is for KOs. And Selfdestruct is used to break a wall or take out a particularly troublesome foe.
"Amnesia-Lax"
Amnesia, Body Slam, Rest, Ice Beam
This set is can surprise those who are unprepared. People often send out their frozen or sleeping pokemon for a sac against Snorlax, so you can take that opportunity to set up. Body Slam is there to hit hard on the physical side, and Ice Beam is the special move of choice due to the type coverage and the chance to freeze. Rest when you need to recover off the damage and start over. This set can be quite effective but is a little harder than the standard.
"SamTheDigital-Lax"
Body Slam, Rest, Reflect, Amnesia
Popularized (and perhaps invented) by SamTheDigital, this set turns Snorlax into somewhat of a tank. Snorlax can still dish out decent damage without Hyper Beam, and now he can last a lot longer. With +6 special and halved incoming physical attacks, Snorlax will be nearly impossible to take down. If you opt for Earthquake over Amnesia, you'll want to have some special sponge support.
WaterWizard modified this set by swapping Body Slam for Double-Edge. This allows Snorlax to 2HKO a paralyzed Chansey, or 1HKO with a crit. Furthermore, the WW-Lax lets you self-induce damage, meaning more time spent using Rest, thus less PP burning for stall situations.
Alternative Options:
-Counter can work very well for Snorlax and usually replaces Hyper Beam.
-Mega Kick can provide very strong (though unreliable) damage and allows Snorlax to 2HKO many pokemon who are otherwise 3HKOs.
-Surf can be used to beat Rhydon and Golem, though it leaves you helpless against Gengar when it replaces Earthquake.
-Reflect can be useful if your team is physically weak.
-Rock Slide is occasionally used against Articuno.
-Blizzard can be used on Amnesia sets for more power.
Counters:
Snorlax is best countered by Counter Chansey. Cloyster is also an excellent counter. Slowbro can do fairly well. The problem is that Snorlax can explode at any time. An Alakazam with Reflect can do moderately well, but an untimely FP can mess things up. Lapras and Exeggutor can kill Snorlax first, but they will sustain a lot of damage and will probably be easily revenge killed. Gengar can switch in on Selfdestruct, and also walls a Surf-Lax. Against the phys set, Rhydon can hit hard and can win first, but he'll lose about 2/3 of his health in the process. Aerodactyl is also notable for walling Snorlax fairly well, although he won't love the paraslams.
Team Role:
Snorlax is a fantastic addition to many teams as a physical sweeper. He requires some paralysis prep for best results, but he is effective even without it. He also has the strongest attack in the game with his STAB Selfdestruct. This can really help tear a hole in the opponent's team. Snorlax really helps shift the metagame from being specially dominated to a bit more balanced.
