Overview
Venomoth is a bit of a generic status inflicter as are many Bugs and Grasses, but Venomoth is a fairly good one. Venomoth has 278 Speed which is fast for a Sleeper and also makes her the fastest Sleep and Stunner, having both Sleep Powder and Stun Spore. However, counting Body Slam, Jynx and Gengar are both faster. Venomoth is otherwise a poor Pokemon with very little offensive power, and can't take any hits well.
Usage
Sleep Powder
Stun Spore
Psychic
Mega Drain
Sleep Powder is used to put a Pokemon to Sleep, and then Venomoth can Paralyze the next one with Stun Spore. Psychic and Mega Drain are for damaging. While Venomoth has quite a few moves, most of them are not useful, and this set is on almost every Venomoth. The only other move that could be viable is Reflect, and perhaps Leech Life to specifically attack Exeggutor for some damage.
While being the fastest Sleep and Stunner looks nice, it doesn't work out in practice. For starters, Jynx and Gengar are both faster, and more likely to put Venomoth to Sleep than vice versa, which makes her Paralyzing abilities useless. Also, the common non-Sleeper leads (Alakazam and Starmie) can hit heavily with Psychic (but can't OHKO). Also, because Venomoth is extremely predictable, Stun Spore should be obvious to the opponent, so switches may not happen. Of course though, Venomoth can be switched if the sleeping Pokemon is predicted to stay in, but it's not recommended for Venomoth to attack with Psychic or Mega Drain since both are weak.
Beyond status infliction, Venomoth really can't do much. With only above average Special and non-STAB attacks, Venomoth's damage is laughable, and easily walled by most Pokemon. To be useful, Venomoth should put something to Sleep, Paralyze multiple Pokemon and be strategically sacrificed when no longer needed. Realistically, Venomoth is better replaced with other Pokemon.
Counters
Since Venomoth is more likely to be a lead, all of the common leads can handle Venomoth except Exeggutor, either by hitting with Psychic/Thunder Wave, or putting Venomoth to Sleep. If Venomoth has put something to Sleep, Stun Spore or an offensive switch will likely follow, so prediction does come in handy. In the worst case scenario, Venomoth uses Stun Spore and Paralyzes a Pokemon, so you may just need to accept that.
Venomoth will likely Paralyze your Pokemon, but her damage is low, so Chansey, Alakazam, and other Specialists can wall her easily, and most Pokemon can KO her in two or three turns. Physicals like Tauros can easily defeat her, but the cost of Paralysis is not worth it. Play cautiously around Stun Spore and Venomoth's pressure, and she's easy to handle.
