Tier: BL
General Bio:
Dugtrio is somewhat enigmatic in RBY. He is a ground pokemon who is FAST. Known as the Crit King, Dugtrio is near the very top of the pack as far as speed and critical hit rates go. His ability to switch in on Electric attacks and dish out some powerful STAB make him pretty useful. However, due to his incredibly low HP and poor defensive stats, he can't take more than 2 hits from pretty much anyone.
Movesets:
"OU Dugtrio"
Earthquake, Slash, Hyper Beam, Sand-Attack
This moveset is designed for the OU metagame. Dugtrio could lead with this, as he causes Gengar to run and also mutually 2HKOs Alakazam. Sand-Attack allows Dugtrio to foil Exeggutor's attempts with Sleep Powder, helps against Blizzard users, and can also prevent Snorlax and others from hitting their targets when they self-KO. Earthquake deals out the general damage and can do quite a lot due to STAB and frequent critical hits. Slash is for Exeggutor and flying foes. Hyper Beam is unstabbed so it has the same power as Earthquake and thus should never be used unless the foe resists ground attacks. Dugtrio can be a nice sweeper at the end of the game as he outspeeds Tauros and Starmie and ties Alakazam.
"BL Dugtrio"
Earthquake, Slash, Rock Slide, Sand-Attack
This is essentially the same as the above set, except Rock Slide replaces Hyper Beam to hit Moltres, Dodrio, Gyarados, and Dragonite a little harder than Slash. This set can also be used in OU against the other legendary birds.
Alternative Options:
-Substitute can be nice if you want an educated look at what you're about to hit, at the cost of 25% of your health and a possible paraslam/freeze risk.
-Body Slam can be used if you want to paralyze grass pokemon.
Counters:
Dugtrio is countered by Exeggutor and Tangela. Other pokemon such as Lapras, Cloyster, and Slowbro can hit him with super effective special attacks that will usually 1HKO him. Articuno can switch in with impudence as long as Dugtrio isn't packing Rock Slide. Snorlax can 1HKO Dugtrio on average with Hyper Beam.
Team Role:
Aside from his immunity to electric attacks, Dugtrio provides something fairly unique to the metagame in that he is a physical attacker who is faster than Tauros, Gengar, Starmie, and Persian, and ties Alakazam. This is pretty significant. It allows him to revenge kill those pokemon and others without being a super easy switch-in. Though perhaps not as unforgiving as a Tauros Body Slam, Dugtrio's Earthquake can definitely shake things up.
