Im an offline pokemon player and the old editions of pokemon makes me nostalgic. While i played the good old blue edition again i read a bit about tactics and game mechanics of these generation. I was fascinated about the critical hit chance, amnesia etc. and researched more! 2 days ago i found this netbattle programm and had my first player vs player fights. And you know what! Battling against players that think and talk makes more fun then battling a team rockets raticate that has hyper fang and uses tackle So i signed up and really look forward to the torney(maybe i will see some hyperfanging raticates ;D) :. Greetings WahN

Welcome! The tournament will be a good opportunity to get practice and you should be able to see people with lots of experience battling.

That's why you level up a Geodude before battling him. Or, ya know, you can just skip that battle. Anyhoo, welcome. To give you a head-start on learning the game, the standard team is basically snorlax/tauros/chansey/exeggutor/alakazam/golem. Standard sets for them are found here. Use that to start getting good, then you can start trying more things after you play a few matches and start getting a grip on the metagame.

Hello! Nice to see some new players and cartridge players try out competitive battling. It's a whole new realm of Pokemon and makes the old games feel fresh! Anyway, since you're entering the tournament, you might want to use up your resources as much as possible to get ready, or not if you're just for learning still right now. I'd recommend reading my guide here, which covers all the final form Pokemon, and most every major point of competitive battling. It's a tad outdated now, but not enough that it wouldn't be useful for you. If you have any questions or anything, feel free to as on on the server, or just make a topic in General Discussion for some pointers or explanations. Have fun!

I wouldn't call Golem standard, but he's as good a place to start as any and I don't want to start a debate. Anyways, welcome! My advice is to take the advice of other people. Also, the easiest way to get better is to play games.

"-Golem, +Gengar "
Right but I'll disagree in one thing here... +Golem -Gengar
snorlax/tauros/chansey/exeggutor and 3 of Alakazam/Golem/Starmie

Yeah, the proper "standard" team is typically a topic of debate, at least outside of egg/chansey/tauros/snorlax. The point is to just not get too hung up on what to use and just use a basic, competent team to learn the basics of the metagame first.

lol, let's not scare the guy.
Wahn, don't worry too much what your first team is like, just focus more on learning than winning until you're more up to par. Once you become confident and comfortable with your abilities, then you can experiment with a lot more success and thought.
