Hiiiiiiii!
So you might have known that I still buzz around with the mods since my post count keeps rising, lol. Though I haven't touched RBY for a long time now, and still don't intend to, I wouldn't mind playing some RBYPlus! So I'll be running things again and all that jazz, but anyway this isn't about me, so onto Plus!
With Pokemon Online finally working well with RBY and database modifying, we have RBYPlus pretty much 100% ready for public release! Mind you, there are still a few minor bugs with how Pokemon Online is working right now, hence the "v0.9", but it's very playable and will be fine for now.
Basically, RBYPlus was a little idea WaterWizard and myself came up with while discussing how awesome Exeggutor would be with Razor Leaf in RBY. After that, we decided to create a whole mod with it. The way we did things was pretty quick, but since PO was a bit slower than we expected with adding RBY, we took more time making it nice and a better game. One of the main things we pushed for is making the game more about buffs than nerfs, so that we weren't playing with crappier Pokemon than RBY, which wouldn't be as fun, but we went through a slew of adjustments to make the game awesome in multiple ways.
-All Pokemon are viable, yet we try to focus more on team building than individual Pokemon. RBY revolves a lot around Tauros and a few lesser others, and that bites, so hopefully we fixed that.
-Defensive play is not just a gimmick, but (should be) viable now. There are a lot of Pokemon designed around defensiveness such as Cloyster, Arcanine, Fearow, and many more.
-Technical play is also less of a gimmick and much more balanced. Because of how RBY revolved around specialists, paralysis was very common. It's still great to use, but not absolutely necessary to be winning now. Other moves like Toxic are more useable now, and Burns/Flinching/Confusion are more common and can be useful.
-Specialists are still great, but Physicals are much more useable now. In RBY, Special is an amazing stat, specialists tend to have Recover, Thunder Wave, a plethora of great TMs, and more. Physicals are usually weak to multiple types, slow, have crappy movepools, etc. This is much more balanced now through stat boosts, improved movepools in both quality and quantity, and smaller types being playable now (Bug, Rock, Ghost, etc)
-Illegal moves are balanced so that there aren't move restrictions anymore. OHKOs are nerfed to 20%, Wrapping moves are all 70%, and Evasion moves are gone (changed to different effects).
-The sleep and lead games are changed in a way so multiple Pokemon can be used. There are also many useful sleepers now, and paralysis spreading isn't the bread and butter of the game, so late sleeping should be more common.
-PP is lowered all around so that stall wars don't take forever. PP is still high enough to be useable, but low enough so that if two defensive players meet, they won't have to stall for 100s of turns.
-Because RBYPlus isn't based around a few individual Pokemon, luck won't completely screw people over (frozen Chanseys, multiple FPs, etc).
-Simpler rules. Instead of a list, all that's required is Freeze Clause, Sleep Clause, Self-KO Clause, and Species Clause.
-And more!
We're hoping the metagame works out in a way so there's a larger gap in skill between individual players, be that the colossal amount of things there are to learn and calculate, perfecting team building, prediction being less of flipping a coin, luck still being a part of the game, but not the entirety of it, etc. Of course though, a lot of this is all just theory-crafted, and if things don't work out or the game becomes imbalanced in some ways, we can fix that!
Right now, we may have frequent updates if we can solve unintentional errors with the game, or if there are superbly broken Pokemon early on, but after the initial while, we'll keep updates rare, so that people don't have to learn a new game every week. We'll have a section to discuss changes and bugs too.
So how do you play? It's pretty easy, just follow these steps:
1) Download RBYPlus here: www.speedyshare.com/z4Cwp/RBYPlus-v0.9.zip Do not extract the ZIP file.
2) Open Pokemon Online and make sure you have the latest version.
3) Open Teambuilder, click Mods, and "Install new mod".
4) Select the RBYPlus ZIP file and install it.
And that's it! Lutra is hosting RBYPlus on his server, Pokemon Perfect, so we can play there. The direct connection is 212.67.209.34:5080 To make a team in RBYPlus, just select it as a generation and go to it!
And just a last note, I'll be cleaning up the boards a bit, and archiving some stuff. If I move anything you wanted to keep in place, just let me know and I'll put it back. I'll also be bumping Isa to a global moderator (for what it's worth, lol) for all the work he's done here! Also mind you, while we are pushing for RBYPlus to be popular, we are still a community for RBY, and we'll still have active members playing!
Hope you guys have fun!
