Anyway, just out of curiosity, Zilch, since you know your stuff about r/b hacking, do you know what move effects 85 and 86 exactly do? I tested them both, first against my rival (when you battle him for the first time), and then against level 2-4 rattatas/pidgeys and such. Around 50% of the hits scored paralysis in the first case, but against the wild Pokemon, out of around 20-25 tries, I got 0 paralysis. Weird, isn't it? lol I haven't experimented with move effects in a while, but here's a table that I made a while back: 00 - Damages 01 - Sleep 02 - Poison (10%), damages 03 - HP drain, damages 04 - Burn (10%), damages 05 - Freeze (10%), damages 06 - Paralyze (10%), damages 07 - User faints, damages 08 - Move always misses (how useful!) 09 - Mirror Move effect 0A - Raises user's Attack 0B - Raises user's Defense 0C - Raises user's Speed 0D - Raises user's Special 0E - Raises user's Accuracy 0F - Raises user's Evasion 10 - Pay Day effect, damages 11 - Swift effect, damages 12 - Lowers foe's Attack 13 - Lowers foe's Defense 14 - Lowers foe's Speed 15 - Lowers foe's Special 16 - Lowers foe's Accuracy 17 - Lowers foe's Evasion 18 - Conversion effect 19 - Haze effect 1A - Bide effect 1B - Thrash effect, damages 1C - Whirlwind effect 1D - Fury Attack effect, damages 1E - Fury Attack effect, damages 1F - Flinch (10%), damages 20 - Sleep 21 - Poison (40%), damages 22 - Burn (30%), damages 23 - Freeze (30%), damages 24 - Paralyze (30%), damages 25 - Flinch (30%), damages 26 - One-hit KO effect 27 - Razor Wind effect, damages (you need a turn to charge up) 28 - Seismic Toss effect, damages 29 - Seismic Toss effect, damages 2A - Wrap effect, damages 2B - Dig effect, damages (invincible for 1 turn, barring Swift) 2C - Double Kick effect 2D - Hi Jump Kick effect 2E - Mist effect 2F - Focus Energy effect 30 - Recoil, damages 31 - Confuse 32 - Greatly raises user's Attack 33 - Greatly raises user's Defense 34 - Greatly raises user's Speed 35 - Greatly raises user's Special 36 - Greatly raises user's Accuracy 37 - Greatly raises user's Evasion 38 - Recover effect 39 - Transform effect 3A - Greatly lowers foe's Attack 3B - Greatly lowers foe's Defense 3C - Greatly lowers foe's Speed 3D - Greatly lowers foe's Special 3E - Greatly lowers foe's Accuracy 3F - Greatly lowers foe's Evasion 40 - Light Screen effect 41 - Reflect effect 42 - Poison 43 - Paralyze 44 - Lowers foe's Attack (10%), damages 45 - Lowers foe's Defense (10%), damages 46 - Lowers foe's Speed (10%), damages 47 - Lowers foe's Special (10%), damages 48 - Lowers foe's Accuracy (10%), damages 49 - Lowers foe's Evasion (10%), damages 4A - Lowers foe's ?, damages 4B - Lowers foe's ?, damages 4C - Confuse (10%), damages 4D - Twineedle effect, damages (always hits twice and can poison) 4E - Crashes game 4F - Substitute effect 50 - Hyper Beam effect, damages (you need to recharge after attacking) 51 - Rage effect, damages 52 - Mimic effect 53 - Metronome effect 54 - Leech Seed effect 55 - Splash effect 56 - Disable effect, damages (the move Disable itself has 0 power)
4A and 4B both lower a glitched stat and have no additional effect in battle. All other effects crash the game, cause glitches to happen, or have no special properties.

Okay, first saying that I haven't forgotten about the hack, it's just that I'm busy with exams and other stuff and I have left this project until late january. It's gonna be finished, hopefully for early 2014. Secondly, since I casually discovered that someone I knew on PO knows about pokemon hacking, he has just told me he wanted to see the hack and I uploaded it so that he can give me some feedback and possibly help on some stuff. For this reason, I thought that I might as well give you all the link in case anyone want to test it and tell me what he/she thinks about the hack so far! www.mediafire.com/?rhbkve56ej3sp08Note that I've only hacked up to route 34, and anything past there is unfinished (goldenrod city) or undone (everything else). I've closed the path to goldenrod city in the version i uploaded so you guys can't get past route 34 =P So yeah, if you want to give it a try, do it. As I said it's a very simple hack, my objective was just making a more competitve and possibly enjoyable version of pokemon crystal. When you are sone up to route 34, just leave it, and when I release the next version, you can start from where you left it in the previous version of the hack. Enjoy

Updated due to progress, new features, and more screenshots. Check the OP!
A more updated version can now be downloaded! The game is now playable up to route 37 and includes some new features as well.

Anybody even tried the hack? lol. I want some feedback!
P.S. Working on the Burned Tower legendary trio script now. Taking it slow though.

Played through it, and damn it's pretty tough. Never thought I could be embarrassed by the beginning of a Pokemon game like this. At least I was able to luck my way out of a tight spot and avoid blacking out up through Falkner.
As for the map changes, I'm not certain forcing passage through tall grass and (what I'm assuming are) higher encounter rates actually make things "harder". It really only seems to make things more tedious, since you (should) have a faster Pokemon ready to just run away. Of course, I've only gotten up through Falkner, so I'm guessing it actually does make things legitimately difficult later on as more statuses are thrown out and faster wild Pokemon appear to prevent easy runaways.
Also, with Sprout Tower, I see what you tried to do with it, but it's pretty ugly to look at and takes a couple of seconds to realize that you're supposed to jump over those ramps. There might be a way to clean up that area by removing some of those ramps/ledges/whatever they are.
Overall, I'm liking it.
PS: In the making of this hack, did you ever find out how moves that are normally 100% accurate, such as Tail Whip and Growl, are set up to occasionally fail in-game when used by your opponent?

Thanks for the comments! Glad you are enjoying it Uhm, tbh, I never thought of that as a way to make the game more difficult. You know, I thought forcing the player to walk through a bit of grass in each route was a good idea, maybe to avoid people trying to play the game extremely fast, and also because the wild pokemon encounters have been modified, and heh, that forces the player to know which pokemon appear there to an extent, and maybe the player is interested in catching one of those pokemon or gaining a few free exp points without "searching" the tall grass. You know, I thought trying to force a bit more of tall grass was a nice addition, and oh well, repels exist for a reason don't they Encounter rates haven't really been increased that much. In fact, all tall grass encounters remain at 25%, although at some caves, at the sprout tower etc, the encounter rate may have been increased a bit (generally to make all indoor encouter rates more similar, or for example in the sprout tower more pokemon appear at night iirc). Uhm, the ramps work exactly the way they do in tin tower when you are going to catch Ho-oh in the real pokemon crystal. I know it probably makes the map a bit uglier, but I thought they're cool! You know, I guess in part it's because the sprout tower map is small, but oh well, I think I came up with a decent puzzle for its size. At least it makes the player think! That was the point Anyway I don't think it looks much worse than Tin Tower... (maybe what makes it ugly is the fact that in my hack there are trainers, I don't know) As for the Growl/Tail Whip thing I dont know...

[*]Storyline until Johto League (hopefully). Includes activating/modifying a few events like Celebi/legendary dogs.[/*] [*]Different fishing and headbutt wild encounters DONE[/*] [*]Different items found in the floor. Slight differences in items sold in marts as well.[/*] [*]Different item prizes DONE[/*] [*]The storyline will be unidirectional from Ecruteak City. I'm yet to decide whether Mahogany Town or Olivine City will go first but the thing is that one of the two "paths" will be inaccesible right after beating the fourth gym so no more underleveled trainers and gyms and that stuff[/*] [*]Remove the 9/8 stat and type boosts provided by badges. DONE[/*] [*]No change Pokemon option (battle style will be "set" by default)[/*] [*]Automatically close the gym doors when entering (a la johto league)[/*] [*]Adequate night/morning/day times (I have the feeling most people usually play past 6:00 PM like I do) DONE[/*] [*]Delay a bit the levels in which Pokemon evolve so that you don't evolve everything by the ~3rd gym already, and consequently re-edit some movesets for convenience DONE[/*] [*]Increase the shiny encounter probability (i.e to 1/512 most likely) DONE[/*]
And that's all I can think for now. I'm sure I'm missing something I've already done but whatever. Ideas/suggestions are welcome! P.S.: This means that when I upload the next version a save file of the former version will not be compatible though, due to changes in some general mechanincs as well as in stuff regarding storyline before the fourth gym (like fishing/headbutt encounters and items).

I decided to upload a new version of the hack that doesn't contain any storyline progress but contains a lot of mechanical additions that make it a lot more accurate compared to what the final version will be. So hopefully, a save file of this new version, will be compatible with the next version(s) I release in the future. I'm doing this in case some people is still downloading the game from the OP but you might as well wait until a new version with more progression in the storyline is released (around September/October).
To know what's new, refer to the quote box in the OP (everything that says *DONE* is new and implemented). You can also explore every cave etc that is reachable before arriving to Ecruteak City (i.e. Rocksmashable paths prior to Ecruteak) because everything has been updated. Just one thing: the game is intended to be played "Battle Mode: SET" (so please, do it!), but it's not forced in this version of the hack (i'll do it when I figure out how). Everything else should be fine and accurate.
As I said, you can also wait for another version with more progress to be released, but if you were going you download the previously listed version, then this one's much better and accurate.

Bump for updates and progress. New screenshots too. See first post. Removing the download link for now, since I'm constantly editing and adding stuff that affects the early game.

Is there a stable version of the hack now? I missed the first version.

I'm going to wait until it's finished to release the hack. Many things from that first version you are talking about have changed anyway.

Looking for a tester for the hack. Should be someone that likes playing Pokemon games/hacks, that doesn't mind playing an unfinished version of the hack, and with enough free time.
Anybody interested tell me so that I can give him the details and a download link.
Not expecting anything though. I could play through the game once again myself, but it is not something i'm particularly looking for.

Wow, I didn't see this before. I have some free time at night. These days I've spend some time for RNG Abuse on Emerald (which has been a success). Anyway, you can find me on PO most of the time and you know it.
Regards.
Off-Topic: Is it possible to RNG abuse for GSC roms?

Never quite knew what RNG abuse was not I was interested by it tbh. But for that matter I only know how to "hack" gens 1 and 2. I suppose the RNG function is based around a counter of X bytes that is constantly counting and whenever the RNG function is called the current value of the counter determines the random number generated. But then again I don't know the specifics and I never really bothered about it. That said, RNG should be manipulable in every game provided you know how, I guess it's just that there aren't as many tools/programs for the GSC games that "do it for you".

Question: with the player's ability to use them removed, can boss trainers like the E4 and later gym leaders still abuse healing items in battle?
|
|
|
Post by Crystal_ on Oct 20, 2013 10:41:03 GMT -8
Funny that you are asking that because it's one of the latest things I have implemented. So yeah, no trainer will be using any healing item (other that held items like Leftovers).

They are partly because I was skipping 2/3 of the frames with vba because sometimes my laptop can't keep up with it and takes up all the cpu (yes I know how stupid this sounds lol but it's true). And partly because the program that I was using to record the screen was probably not too good...
