So I was going to ask Isa what on earth inspired his user name... but I decided to just make a post about it for everyone to comment.

So five years ago, roughly, I decided to re-register on Neopets. Having previously used the username Rostigalen (which I also use on Smashboards for those frequenting there), but subsequently forgotten my password and my faked birthday, I needed something new. This new username...was Isawithappen. I dunno why. Anyway, I then found a place related to Neopets dedicated to making levels for one of their games. I signed up as Isawithappen there as well, and became a regular. People thought that Isawithappen was a bit long, so they started calling me "Isa". It stuck. Fun things about "Isa": 1. It's the Arabic name for Jesus 2. It's a common nickname for females named Isabelle/Isabella, leading to multiple confusing looks and wrong gender usage 3. I once saw an artist (or at least, her name written out) in Sweden named "Isa Diamant", translating to "Isa Diamond", which is a great name

I like the name Dexter. I started using it when I became obsessed with the show Dexter at one point.
Fun fact: Dexter is a Latin adjective meaning "on the right hand side, skillful, fortunate, favorable, proper, fitting". I am actually left handed though.

I wanted a handle eons ago when I was maybe 10 years old, and went with "Ice24", and later when I decided that numbers are lame, I went as just "Ice". The problem was that I'd get mixed up with other people all the time wherever community I was in, so later I changed it to "Icy", and then threw in some 1337 gibberish in front of it as a distinguisher. I still manage to get confused with other people though; I got a PM from some smasher telling me how amazing I was at Apex 2012 (mixing me up with European player, Ice), and I've been mistaken for Icylight among Pokemon communities.
I'd rather just get called "Icy" or by my real name when hanging with smashers or people from other gaming communities, and it's always the most awkward thing ever when people say "SUP TUH ICY!". Usually by the socially awkward players, lol.
I honestly wouldn't mind changing it, but I've gone with my handle for too long and used it everywhere, so it's sort of too late, lol. Not as bad as "Dr. PeePee" though (the amazing Falco player).

By the way, Isa, what's the pronunciation? Is it EYE-SUH, or IZZ-UH, or something else? I've been saying the first and I have no idea if that's wrong, lol.

Swedish: Eeh-sah English: Eye-sah Dumbish: Iss-uh (I've never even heard of this pronunciation, what is this really)
When I'm talking in English I, like everyone else, adjust my nick for the audience. I think of myself as Eeh-sah, but if I'm introducing myself, I'll say Eye-sah if the listener does not understand Swedish.
With others, it's a bit different. Crystal and Icy, for example, I pronounce like they're supposed to, but Consumptus is not English and so I pronounce it in Swedish (the main difference is the u sounds different - either way, nothing big).

translate.google.se/#en/sv/isaThis is pretty much how it's supposed to be pronounced in Swedish. I realized that you English-speakers can't really pronounce i "the way it's supposed to be", so this'll do. /snob If you translate from Swedish to English, Google has the correct pronunciation once again.

Crystal was my favourite gb game back then around the time it was released. I went with this name to the old netbattle when i sucked and basically only had in-game knowledge and used 4spcattacks@cband mewtwos and these things (must be around late 2006 - early 2007). I played rated most of the times so I ended up with a 15-120 like record after some months, which for obvious reasons I didn't like so I decided to modify my name to reset it. I went with Crystal_ instead of Crystal. for some reason I don't remember, and from there, between challenge cup, level balance trolling and other shit as well as the fact that other people were even worse than me at the time, I managed to set up a positive record.
And my name stayed Crystal_ from there (or Crystal_ [RBY] or [GSC] or [RSE] or whatever)

Maybe Norwegian.
What's the story behind your username, Jorgen? Is your real name just Jorgen, or...?

Post by Lutra on Nov 22, 2012 8:00:32 GMT -8
When I was about 9, I wanted a name for myself because my first name is Jack and there were about 3 different Jacks in my class. I wanted a more unique name. Lutra is latin for Otter. As a result, it is also a genus of otters which includes the European Otter (Lutra lutra). I chose it because one of my older brothers (6 1/2 years older) was interested in memorising things such as nations, capital cities of those nations, and binomial names for animals. I pretty much copied most of his tastes back then, so I loved otters (and memorising those things) just as he did. So I had the name Lutra. But when it came to going on NetBattle for the first time, I had no idea how many users used NetBattle. Fearing my name Lutra would be taken, I decided to combine Jack with Lutra - and for that I also wanted a vowel in between. 'I' sounded the nicest to me. So my username became Jackilutra. One day, I accidentally changed the pass and forgot my old pass for NB. Therefore I took away the 'c' and it became Jakilutra - my current long user name. As it happened, I could actually get away with using Lutra on Pokemon simulators Edit: Oh and my user name in Greek letters is λούτρα, which is close to λούτρο [bath, bathroom, bathing]

Me username feels so unoriginal now hearing all these stories.
The story behind my username is that I play(and do quite well at) a CCG called Redemption.

For my own username, I used "Bigfoot" in quite a few places until I reached GameFAQS where it was - naturally - taken.
At around the time I was a (relatively) young Scottish guy in his early 20s that was enjoying messing around in Final Fantasy VIII - I'm sure it doesn't take a genius to work that one out. Before long it had stuck well enough that I kinda never went back to "Bigfoot".
I believe that till this day I'm the only person that uses the name "Gunbladelad" - the closest I've ever seen is someone called "Gunbladelady" on some foreign-language website I can't understrand. Heck - a websearch for "Gunbladelad" will only report back stuff I've been involved with or quoted in.

Maybe Norwegian. What's the story behind your username, Jorgen? Is your real name just Jorgen, or...? Nope. Not Nordic in any sense. All-American right here. I just chose my name because it began with a J. I guess I wanted that because my IRL name begins with J and I've had a lot of nicknames that also began with J. I was toying around with names like Jarvis and Jerry in a couple other places before Jorgen popped out as having a particularly fun-sounding pronunciation. I mean, it's got the J pronounced like a Y, plus I had pretty much JUST figured out how to pronounce those funky-looking O's after recently reading a paper with a Norwegian first author. (Up until then, I had been internally pronouncing slashed or umlaut-endowed O's with even STRONGER O-sounds, rather than making them more schwa-like). Also I guess the OddParents were in the back of my mind, I dunno, though mostly as a great example of how not to pronounce the name.

You people make me feel so uncreative. Dre is just short for my real name, Andre.
I got the nickname from the rapper Dr. Dre (which I listened when I was like 14-15), but I didn't adopt as if I was naming myself after him, I wouldn't call myself Dre if my name wasn't Andre.
Although, if I end up doing a PHD in philosophy, I'll totally introduce myself as Dr. Dre.

My username? I was on NB one day under my old ID, Gherkin, when I decided to play some RSE for one of the few times in my life. My opponent was some boastful noob who declared something along the lines of "ur skills r zilch!!!"
After thrashing the idiot 6-0 (which, considering my level of skill at 3rd gen, really says something about him), I decided to change my name to reflect that little victory. The fact that I was also getting a bit tired of being associated with pickles factored into it, too.

I don't know how I picked my name, but it is really an awful one... WW looks nice, but the actual name "WaterWizard" sounds so nerdy and just... loser! I really don't know. A hilarious story is when I left the scene for a few months, and then returned as Frost_Byte (a name I like much better!). Icy was so shocked to find a good player who could read him so well, and we had a lot of fun battles. He was in nothing short of awe. This lasted for about two weeks. Then one day I was switching teams and I accidentally swapped to a team that was saved under WaterWizard. And I said, "Oops!" And Icy was like... OMG! It was pretty great. Also, I pronounce Isa's name as "eye zuh." And Dexter, I'm a lefty too, and I've always found the dexterous/liberal associations to be demoralizing... Or at least amusing.

I have to apologize for asking where everyone's names came from and not telling you the origin of my own. A number of years ago when I was making my gmail account I decided to say in my profile that I was accociated with the fictitious "Pancake Productions", and I thought a good alias for that would be AgentSyrup. Essentially I never got tired of that name. I think it is cool and goofy sounding at the same time so it seems to be just right for the internet. Also once I start making Youtube videos I shall have my openings say "Pancake Productions by AgentSyrup".

@WaterWizard
lol good times! I think the funniest was about Cloyster when you were "Wild Moltres".
And I hate my tag too. :P I think if I could change it, I'd just use my last name.

Mine is pretty OK, but it gets weird to explain to my real life friends why my steam nick is Axel/Isa (my first name is Axel). Some people think Isa is the name of my girlfriend. =p

I'm distantly related to the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and I'm super tall, so the name stuck.
I'm called MaskedMarth on Smashboards, and this one's a more interesting story. My first message board was Pokémasters and there I chose "Devious" as my username because, I dunno, it's one of those words nerds think sound cool. I joined Smashboards as Devious but, being young and stupid, got myself banned. I circumvented the ban with the username "Masked" (because this new identity was a mask!).
At about the same time I signed up to GameFAQs and, the username Masked having been taken, I added my main character, Sheik, on the end and because MaskedSheik.
Then there was some snafu in the Smashboards database when I changed my password or e-mail or something so instead of going through the hassle of asking the administration to fix my account, I just reregistered as MaskedMarth, my new main character.
I like Longfellow a bit better than Maskedwhatever though I wish it weren't a gendered username.

I just wanted to come up with something sci-fi related, so I eventually landed on posthuman (I've always loved science-fiction movies/books). I've gotten bored of it though... and lol people call me "post", which isn't quite what I had in mind. I have some alternative ideas, but I don't play games as often anymore; I've been lazy and just stuck with it.
Dex/WW: I'm a lefty too. The universe has connected us.
ALSO I like how "posthuman" looks when lowercase, as shown, but Eric has decided that he likes it capitalized more, so he's bent my name to his will--several times, I believe.
