There are some pretty zaney stories about Mimic battles. I'm wonder who uses mimic well. And when are the best opportunities to use it.

Those who use Mimic well are Pokémon with no really good fourth move but can make use of a move used by a switch-in. Jynx, Zapdos and Dodrio can get Softboiled/Recover, Earthquake and Earthquake respectively, plus some other fancy things. Use it when you predict a switch, kind of like Substitute in later generations (Substitute in RBY tends to get used mostly when the foe is paralyzed).
Most notably though, on NBS and in UU, Dewgong was a great counter to the common Golduck. This was because Mimic on NBS would only steal moves not already known by the Mimic user. So if Golduck runs Surf/IBeam/Rest/Amnesia, you just let your Dewgong run Surf/IBeam/Rest/Mimic, and you'll mimic Amnesia every time. The reason that Dewgong is a counter with that is of course that it's an Ice type, and following that it cannot be frozen in an Amnesia war.

Jackal Dodrio. Read about it in the 3rd paragraph here.

Lapras draws Recover users, and Recovering Lapras is not something I'd like to face. The problem is, of course, that it has a ton of other good moves.
I hadn't thought of using Mimic on Zapdos. To be used with Reflect, I'd presume?

Mimic has its place, especially in NU where Electrode and Magneton can Mimic an incoming Rhyhorn and try to get EQ.

TBH, in NU I prefer eliminating Grounds and running TBolt/TWave/Reflect/Rest. Works nicely in UU as well.

Yeah, Mimic is too risky and even then, not really effective in that case. But at least they have some sort of option.
