Overview
As the original Tangela analysis seems dead in the water, I thought I might as well write one. Tangela is the only pure Grass type in the game. Like Exeggutor, Tangela can Sleep and Stun, but the lack of Psychic resistance and ability to Explode hurt it relative to Eggy. The low HP doesn't help either. Still, Tangela gets Growth and Swords Dance to give it a niche, even if it's a little too niche to regularly work in OU.
Movesets
Sleep Power
Stun Spore
Growth
Mega Drain
Being able to both Sleep and Stun is nice. Growth is a slower version of Amnesia, but it's still a good attack. Mega Drain has low base power, especially for a main attack, but with Growth and Tangela's decent Special the damage (and healing) can still be significant. The idea behind the set is to Sleep something and then Growth (or Stun Spore) on the switch. Tangela can be quite hard to KO once it's set up.
Sleep Power/Stun Spore
Swords Dance
Body Slam/Hyper Beam
Mega Drain
Although Tangela has decent defences, its low Attack stat prevents Swords Dance from being too scary. Still, you'll hopefully get a free opportunity to Swords Dance after you sleep something, and your opponent may well send in Chansey to counter the Growth set, which Tangela can attack on the physical side (although it has to watch out for Ice Beam damage). Body Slam and Hyper Beam can both be used instead of Mega Drain, but it makes you vulnerable to Golem and Rhydon.
Other Options
Rest works reasonably well, but Tangela is already difficult to KO. Bind should also be considered if legal.
Counters
Articuno is a great counter, as it shrugs off Mega Drains (and Body Slams) and hits back with a mighty Blizzard. Exeggutor also doesn't have much to fear. Chansey must be wary of Swords Dance, but can be easily used against Growth variants (although you may end up having to try to freeze Tangela if it's used Growth as youoften end up in a stalemate). Jynx is faster and has STAB Blizzard too. Lapras and Starmie must watch out for Mega Drain, but make pretty decent checks.
Opinion
Exeggutor outclasses Tangela in almost every regard, limiting Tangela to a "fun game" only pokemon. Still, the ability to Sleep and Stun is always welcome, and Tangela makes a good counter for Golem/Rhydon, as well as a good check for Slowbro.
