ATQ Regional R2 - Nitro vs Pyramid Head

So as we all know, the ATQ guys aren't known for being the most advanced of RBY players. The problem is, straightforward play, with a little luck, can still beat anyone in RBY. This is where RBY gets truly difficult imo, since you really don't have much time to feel out an opponent you've never played before.
pyramidhead vs Nitro [RBY]. Begin!
pyramidhead sent out Gengar (Lv.100 Gengar)!
Nitro [RBY] sent out Alakazam (Lv.100 Alakazam)!

Nitro [RBY]: glhf
So right away I have Zam against Gengar lead. Gengar lead is oh-so-typical for poorer RBY players, so I'm not surprised here. Whether or not he keeps it in, though, will show whether I've got a real fight on my hands or not.

dm: want me to leave?
He goes to Eggy...what the hell? Guess he wanted that special fall out of the way immediately, without even softboiling first. In any case, I feel pretty dumb here because I've lost the sleep advantage. Should have gone to my own Egg in the first place. Especially against Gengar teams, it's better to sleep with Egg since it doesn't just let Gengar come in without a sweat, giving me a better chance to sleep a better pokemon. It's not like Egg is scared of a special downed Chansey Ice Beam anyway. Mistake #1.

Another pretty dumb move in retrospect. I was trying to be a little aggressive and get an explosion going on something else. At the time, though, I was pissed that I'd slept gengar and half wouldn't mind if it woke up and exploded on my egg/switched out allowing me to sleep something else. Would also get rid of (what I thought was) his defense for exploders. But obviously putting in egg just invites in his own egg or chansey. Mistake #2.

It was pretty clear he wanted to trade Eggs with me. I was still a bit confused. Is it REALLY not going to sleep me? Better play in retrospect would have been to go back to Zam a couple of turns earlier and set up reflect. I often don't mind trading Eggs anyway, since it opens up my Golem/physicals a bit more. The downside is that I'm also left open to Golem, and I didn't know at this point that he had one.

Umm, crap. Slowbro is NOT something I want to see. Now I'm sweating. My egg is gone. My chansey doesn't have tbolt. My zam doesn't have stoss. My stance on Slowbro has always been that its rare enough that I can usually play around it through stuff like late game sleep and explosion. Explosion is going to be hard here since he has both Gengar AND Golem, and I've already slept his Gengar. This is actually really bad.

Yea..crap. Golem is a very solid Lax counter in RBY (unless Lax surfs). Unless you paraslam Golem on the switch in, Golem will kill Lax first and then still be free to take an explosion later/explode itself later/wall Zapdos as long as needed. When your Lax is not AT LEAST trading 1 for 1 with something, that's very bad. I have to make a move here since Lax is too valuable. I've gotten Golem down to KO range for my other pokemon (Golem, Tauros, Chansey at this point), so lets try to force the thing out.

But now I realize...what am I doing here? Golem is coming right back, and I can't even KO it with a predicted EQ. He's going to get an explosion off if he wants, but will he explode? He can EQ lax down to extremely low life, which a Tauros could then just come in and finish. I could try to anticipate Golem coming back in by switching to Tauros. That would have been really nice, but I can't afford to get Tauros twaved at all. I should have realized in retrospect that he was protecting his chansey, since it had the advantage over my own chansey.

Yea, I choose to EQ and pressure Golem into exploding. He really could have EQ'd here without too much consequence, but he has not seen that I even have Golem yet, so I banked that he would explode. Worst case scenario, he'd EQ my golem for a huge chunk of damage, but then he would not explode next turn, allowing chansey to switch into his EQ, force him out, and then next time Lax is in Golem can't switch in at all (even bslam would kill).

Sweet. That actually works out really nicely. Golem is still JUST outside Tauros Blizzard KO range, and Chansey Ice Beam will need an absolute perfectly max roll to KO. Golem is still a major threat which is crucial. I can't emphasize enough how far behind I am in this match even still at this point. My early game was incredibly sloppy.
pyramidhead sent out Slowbro (Lv.100 Slowbro)!
---------------------------------
End of turn #30
pyramidhead's Slowbro: 81% HP
Nitro [RBY]'s Golem: 240 HP
Yea, Slowbro is a huge threat to me. Bait explosion much? All signs point to explosion bait here, but Slowbro DOES survive this explosion, so is he possibly leaving it in? He hasn't switched in Gengar at all to try to catch an explosion at this point, but honestly this would be the time... My sing chansey is walled hard by par'd chansey, so who cares if Gengar dies? I need to hit Slowbro, however, and this is about as good an opportunity as I'll have to do it.
Begin Turn #31

CH is very nice since it ends the threat. Tauros bslam was finishing that thing off anyway, though. I'm just much more fortunate to have hit Slowbro at all. So we've got sleeping gar, Tauros, and par'd Chansey up against Chansey, Tauros, and 48% health Snorlax. Suddenly I have the advantage.

---------------------------------
End of turn #31
pyramidhead's Tauros: 100% HP
Nitro [RBY]'s Snorlax: 246 HP
I figured Tauros was coming. With 246 HP, he needs a nearly-max damage Hyper Beam in order to KO me (250 max). I like those odds. I hesitate as this is yet another great time for him to bait explosion. But if he didn't bait the last one, as blatantly obvious as it was, I don't see him baiting this one. Plus, earlier he had wrecklessly Hyper Beamed my Alakazam, so I figure he's probably going to do that again. Self D time.

In the absolute nick of time, Tauros pulls it off. This wasn't my best work, and I was up against a difficult team for my team, but this is the danger of the ATQ players. They will use Tauros very wrecklessly, but if they get lucky in those spots, its incredibly difficult to overcome (imagine if you played like you knew exactly when Tauros would ch or par slam or max damage, and you were right about this all the time).
