For those new to competitive RBY, here are some basic guidelines. If you follow these, you'll always have a goal throughout the battle. Knowing what you want to accomplish as you go along is essential to victory. Having a checklist during each phase is key in maintaining control of the match. This mindset applies to any battle, though the specifics will of course change depending on the team match-ups.
~
Basic goals to have in a standard RBY battle: (steps/goals within each phase are in no particular order)
Early-Game:
Sleep someone Let Gengar get slept, if you must let someone get slept Let Chansey get paralyzed Paralyze all enemy pokes except Chansey (note: if you possess 2-3 of the special walls, consider waiting to paralyze Alakazam until you know enemy Chansey's fate)
Mid-Game:
Freeze Chansey/Alakazam Blow up Eggy on Starmie/Chansey Weaken/kill non-recovering pokes (Snorlax, Persian, etc) In case of personal Zapdos, remove enemy Golem In case of enemy Zapdos, conserve personal Golem In case of personal Slowbro, remove Zapdos/Starmie
Pre-Late-Game
Amnesia your Snorlax/Slowbro or Safely send out Tauros/Zapdos
Late-Game:
Sweep with Snorlax/Slowbro/Tauros/Zapdos

Keep in mind these are just guidelines, not static rules you need to follow to win. When you get to a certain level of play, you will likely be able to come up with your own strategies whether they're improvisations or prepared before battle. -posthuman
