Okay, the surprise is here.
(Note: the following tactic does not work In-Game or on Stadium)
While playing a RBY CC match over Christmas break, I discovered something odd. During the course of the battle, my Ditto transformed into a pokemon that had Mimic as one of its moves. For my own amusement, I tried to use Mimic against the enemy pokemon. The move failed.
I ended up killing the other pokemon with Tbolt or something, and then I proceeded to use Mimic on the next pokemon. The move worked that time.
After the battle, I did some thinking and experimenting. Apparently, a pokemon cannot Mimic a move it already has. Therefore, if the enemy pokemon as the exact same 4 moves, the move Mimic will fail.
This sent me reeling... I realized that if the enemy has 3 moves that your pokemon has, and one different move, Mimic will always get the one move that you don't have.
Thinking about OU, there are a lot of pokemon with similar movesets. Chansey/Starmie/Lapras/Alakazam/Zapdos all have similar moves, with one or two moves that are unique to them.
If Mimic is added to the right moveset, and used against the right pokemon, one can Mimic exactly the move he wants.
Think Amnesia Starmie, Psychic/Recover Zapdos, etc.
There is a lot of potential here. I think Mimic may reshape the metagame some.
I've been holding onto this secret for several weeks now while testing out its usefulness. I finally told Icy, and we've been going through the fully evolved pokes and seeing who can use Mimic well. We've found a few candidates who will really make use of this discovery. I think Icy will be posting the list of Mimic users sometime soon on this thread.
Incidentally, I believe I'm the first person to publish this phenomenon, and I'm certain this information is not on Smogon, and it's probably not on any other site.
