Pokemon games recycled.

First off, the topic title doesn't mean you can go and recycle your Pokemon cartridge games for money. Too bad we cant, though. I tried to sell my Yellow version to a game vendor and he offered me 27 cents. Great, I could afford a little more than a 1/4th of a soda with that.
Anyway! So the other night a bunch of my friends and I had one of those 'man, do you remember the RBY days?' conversations. So one thing lead to another and one of my buddies said something about the new 5th generation Pokemon not even looking like Pokemon and why even continue to make new Pokemon. So with that I kind of thought about how the games would be if GameFreak brought out new versions but with the same original 151 Pokemon. The only things that would change are the game mechanics. Basically everything you see in the new games, minus the new Pokemon.
I then wondered how the metagame would be if such a thing were to occur. I'm sure someone can make a tournament on Pokemon Online with only the original 151 allowed, but after being involved in RBY for quite awhile, I thought about how many players in RBY don't stick to the same old OU Pokemon and start testing and playing around with different Pokemon and combos and such. I'm sure if the games didn't have any new Pokemon but came out in different versions, people would think of new ways to change the metagame. Kind of like how the beginning of the 4th generation was with only Diamond/Pearl. Everything was basic, things like Electivire were popular at the time and then Platinum came around and changed everything. Basically what I'm saying is that when you play a certain generation for such a long time, you figure out new ways of defeating certain Pokemon.
So if GameFreak decided on just leaving the original 151 (and please don't state there were more than 151 to begin with. I know there were plans of having like 190 to begin with and that certain characters in RBY say something in-game that relates to a new Pokemon today) and released the later generations with the same mechanics in each generations games, how do you think it would turn out? Would it be boring and repetitive? New mechanics, items, moves, etc. would create a 'new' metagame? Discuss.
