Awhile ago, I noticed all the data files for Pokemon Online are just text and very easily edited, and today when Destiny Warrior did a little testing, I thought to do some too.
First off, the big question is if this will actually work. What I did was modify some GSC stuff for testing and gave Celebi ExtremeSpeed. And when you battle:
It works!
But of course you're also wondering if this could be a severe cheating problem. So I tested out my modded Celebi in a test server annnnd:
It doesn't allow you to use that move!
The way to determine what's legal and not is the server itself has a database of information and it simply checks for matches when you login. In other words, if Harrison were to host a server with the modified data files for RBYPlus and we had matching ones, we could play RBYPlus!
The only issue is some editing. For a lot of numbers including power, accuracy and effects, the numbers for their corresponding moves are jumbled up together. So for example, let's say Sky Attack, Hyper Beam and Thunderbolt all came in order. It would look like this in the power file: 14015095. The problem is how the program knows where to start and stop for the next move. I'm hoping that Notepad just doesn't show some indenting. Anyway, this might be a bit tricky, but I'm sure we'll find a solution.
The actual editing is all jumbled like that, so it would take awhile to get everything in perfectly. Chances are when we first make RBYPlus, there's bound to be some typos here and there, but we'll get them all eventually. I'll try to have patch updates as we need them for error fixes and balance changes.
So, all that's left is waiting for Pokemon Online to update for RBY and we should be set to go. I would suggest having two installations if you plan on using Pokemon Online for regular RBY too. Though, I would prefer we continue playing Netbattle for tournament matches until we're sure Pokemon Online is bug-free for RBY to avoid any problems.
For now, Harrison's server has scripts for RBYPlus that can assist you if you play Pen and Paper style. And as always, feel free to shoot some suggestions and ideas if you have them.
And lastly, I'm going to try to make the RBYPlus thread more visual instead of just text so we can get more of a grasp on the changes. I'm not sure how I'll go at doing this yet, but I'll think of something pretty.
