Ok, screw it. I'm making this thread. lol. Pokemon Trading Card Game originally came out in 1998 with the Gameboy Color. Here's a link to the Bulbapedia article.I recently found out about the Japanese only, Pokémon Card GB2: Here Comes Team GR! Here's the link to that article ;]There is an english translation patch on the internet. Both games are about your plucky hero who collects the Pokemon trading cards. He decides to try his luck against the various Gyms for a chance at the 4 legendary Pokemon Cards. The second game is a direct sequel. I think I've beaten the first game at least 3 or 4 times by now. I always seem to come back to it, and it's a great classic. It hasn't aged terribly well, but that's not a deal breaker. Definitely give it a try if you haven't. I usually start with the Charmander and Friends deck and transition into a full on Flamethrower deck as soon as I can. Try and make your own gimmicks! In that respect, the sequel is much better. With a host of new cards and new sets, there are a lot more options. Anyone want to post their thoughts/decks?

My favorite TCG1 Deck:
16x Grass Energy 4x Nidoran F 2x Nidorina 4x Nidoqueen 4x Nidoran M 2x Nidorino 4x Nidoking 4x Professor Oak 4x Bill 4x Pokemon Breeder 4x Energy Search 4x Computer Search 4x Item Finder
Basically I rush to get Nidoqueen up with a bench full of Nidokings, or otherwise spam Toxic as soon as possible. Not exactly the most viable deck, but it's fun and a bit unique.

Promo Mewtwo would like to have a word with you

Yup.
If I want to play to win, I can just pull out a haymaker of some sort, Rain Dance, or Wigglytuff mix, etc. Big Thunder decks are also amazing, but they're GB only.

You ever play a Clefable deck against promo mewtwos? It's hella fun. You could probably combo that with a nidoking + scyther deck and cause some trouble (in the old meta)

TCG1; fun deck 1 Gloom/Vileplume
12x Grass 2x DCE
4x Oddish 4x Gloom 4x Vileplume 4x Scyther
4x Oak 4x Bill 4x Switch 4x Item Finder 3x Comp Search (would be 4 but I don't have that many) 3x Devolution Spray 2x Gust 2x E Search 2x E Removal 2x Trader
Gloom is the only card in the game that causes 100% confusion, and Foul Odor is the main attack of this deck. Most of your game play is going to be Foul Odor then next turn play a switch to scyther, and either free retreat back to gloom and poisonpowder and watch the opponent kill itself while slowing dying from poison or just using scyther's slash to finish them off.
Vileplume's petal dance is actually a pretty good attack and can help take down big pokemon like chansey. Scyther is just there because of free retreat but he's also good at picking off weakened things or when it's not worth confusing yourself and can sometimes get off a sword's danced slash to win on the second turn if the AI starts with a weak basic.
Confusion is so broken in this game since it's permanent and can prevent both retreating and attacking. Both gloom and vileplume's attacks cause self confusion so switch is the most important trainer in the deck and is more versatile than full heal. Devolution spray can also work like a full heal, and it's mainly there because hey, why not, what other deck are you going to use it in? You could also run this deck without vileplume at all but that's not as fun.

You could also mix Promo Venusaur and use Solar Power at the start of each of your turns. That card is one of the two "phantom cards" that you can only get by Card Pop, so with emulator, you need to use Gameshark to get them. Here's the Venusaur card anyway: Basically you use that, then re-use Foul Odor so Gloom is never Confused, and the opponent always is. Here's another interesting one, but a little bit boring to play: Chansey Drainer: 12x Any Basic Energy 4x Double Colorless Energy 4x Chansey 4x Professor Oak 4x Bill 4x Clefairy Doll 4x Mysterious Fossil 4x Energy Removal 4x Super Energy Removal 4x Computer Search 4x Item Finder 4x Gambler 4x Recycle Basically, you stall with Chansey and continually drain out the opponent's energies. It's actually not bad against haymakers if you can get around Hitmonchan. Item Finder and Recycle are to re-use Energy Removals, Clefairy Doll and Mysterious Fossil are to waste a turn along with energy draining, and Gambler is for use if you have fewer cards than the opponent to avoid decking out. Sometimes I replace cards with Scoop Up and Pokecenter.

^God, that's almost as bad as the Mewtwo deck that consisted of using barrier every turn.^
I was a massive fan of Venuscentre decks back in the day, they were a lot of fun! For those unaware, Venusaur allowed you to move around grass energy, which, combined with pokemon centre, allowed to heal all your pokemon for free (assuming you had 1 pokemon with no damage). Something like:
4 Bulbasaur 2 Ivysaur 3 Venusaur 4 Scyther 3 Chansey
3 Bills 3 Prof. Oak 3 Computer Search 2 Pokemon Breeder 3 Pokemon Centre 2 Scoop Up (worked like a mini pokemon centre) 1 Item Finder 2 Pluspower 2 Gust of Wind
3 Double Colourless Energy 20 Grass Energy
I was also a fan of Golduck and Dodrio, 2 underrated pokemon imo. But yeah, Haymaker/Wigglytuff was the way to go if you just wanted to win.

Does anyone want to talk about specific Haymaker decks?
I personally ran Mewtwo, Hitmonchan, and Scyther with Wigglytuff. Electabuzz is good, but the overlapping weakness to Hitmonchan made me take him out.
Debating Scyther vs Magmar was a tough choice. But I ran with Scyther for his colorless Slash.

The original Haymaker back when only Base set existed was Farfetch'd, Electabuzz, and Hitmonchan, and they beat each other cyclically. Then when Jungle came out, Farfetch'd got replaced by Scyther, and Electabuzz wasn't as amazing. Then came Fossil and Fossil's Magmar was the anti-Scyther. Electabuzz is a nice lead because of Paralysis, and he's still great for taking out Rain Dance decks, but most of the time, Haymakers are focusing on Scyther and Hitmonchan, in my opinion.
Anyway, my version of the Haymaker:
5x Lightning Energy 5x Fighting Energy 4x Double Colorless Energy 4x Scyther 4x Electabuzz 4x Hitmonchan 4x Professor Oak 4x Bill 4x Energy Search 4x Energy Removal 2x Switch 4x Computer Search 4x Pluspower 4x Item Finder 4x Gust of Wind
And here's my Wigglymaker, or as I call "Do the Swords Dance!":
12x Grass Energy 4x Double Colorless Energy 4x Scyther 4x Jigglypuff L16 (Lullaby one) 4x Wigglytuff 4x Professor Oak 4x Bill 4x Clefairy Doll 4x Mysterious Fossil 4x Pokeball 4x Computer Search 4x Pluspower 4x Item Finder
I occasionally change it around, like removing the fossils and using Gust of Wind instead. This variant focuses more on getting the Turn 2 60 damage, rather than the power afterwards. Honestly, it's probably less viable than a more offensive-oriented one, but I like this one. :D

Bill and Gust of Wind should be in every deck not aiming to stall. =p

The thing is that once Wigglytuff is all powered out, she's basically OHKOing everything. Gust of Wind would be nice for Hitmonchan, but that's usually what's waiting to come out after you KO something. The only time Gust of Wind is extremely useful is when an opposing Hitmonchan has 2 Energies and is waiting to use Special Punch.
But yeah, like I mentioned, my variation is probably not the best one.

I'd forgotten about Gust of Wind, haha. I'll edit my deck to slide it in somewhere.
The problem with Hitmonchan was that he lost horribly to both Scyther and promo Mewtwo, so by the time of Fossil or so he'd lost a lot of strength. If anyone played up to the Gym expansion then Rocket's Zapdos was insanely badass in Haymaker decks too. (Rocket's Scyther and Chan also deserve a mention.)

Yeah, it really depends on how many sets of cards we're considering are available. I'm assuming only Base/Jungle/Fossil in my decks.

Since this is the TCG thread, only the cards that are available in TCG/TCG2 should be talked about.
I honestly don't know much of the Pokemon TCG past jungle/fossil-ish. I believe I collected Yugioh cards instead of Pokemon ;o
Anyways, today I played a bit more and beat all the trainers in the Sealed Fortress. Some of them are pretty hard! The one with the Wigglytuff deck surprised me tbh. Lost one game to it straight up.

So, I played a little more, and I now have 440/443 cards.
Missing Promo Mankey lv7, a Flying Pikachu, and a Surfing Pikachu.
Also, anyone know how to get the rest of the coins? lol.

Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. It would be super fun! If someone could figure out how to set it up, and maybe write a little guide on the how to, that would be amazing! <3 If not, like I said, I can when I can.

Oh, Link battles. Meh.
10 challenge cup wins. wtf. I can't even get them to start =(
EDIT: I suspect the challenge cups start after you fight a number of duels....
Guess I'll just spam some duels....

I -think- resetting the game resets the challenge cup (at least it did in the first game as long as you weren't inside), so just soft reset and re-enter the challenge cup building until it starts

Dexter is right.
Soft resetting seems to do the trick.

So yeah, I am now the proud owner of 443/443 cards.
I got the Promo Mankey from the Black Box. I've already traded for almost everything in the FAQ. The two special Pikachu's were traded by Mr. Ishihara (the guy with his own house). You just have to wait a while... Perhaps it's similar to the Challenge Cup, where you can soft reset.

|
|
Post by t3h Icy on Nov 12, 2012 21:36:35 GMT -8
Good stuff! Yeah, Ishihara will go back and forth between his places, based on where you last saved. After that, I believe he stays on GR Island, where you can battle him whenever. His deck is ass, lol.
If you want the two last cards, you need to 'shark them. Lugia and Here Comes Team Rocket are pretty good cards too, so it's worth it.
After that, maybe get 4x of everything to be able to make any deck. ;D
And eventually, we'll have to do some matches. It'd be fun to play against someone that isn't AI.

Super fun new deck I made: Pollenlax!
8x Grass Energy 4x Double Colorless Energy 4x Recycle Energy 4x Oddish L21 4x Dark Gloom L21 4x Snorlax L20 4x Professor Oak 4x Item Finder 4x Challenge! 4x Gust of Wind 4x Computer Search 4x The Boss's Way 4x Bill 4x Bill's Teleporter
Basically, rush to have Snorlax active, and then fill the bench with as many Dark Glooms as possible. Since each one gives a 50% chance at Confusing the opponent and the other 50% of Confusing Snorlax (which he's immune to), the opponent is almost constantly Confused while you suffer no drawbacks. This is just a base, and other cards like Pluspower, Switch, and Sleep! all work great too. On top, on the rare chances that the opponent is not Confused, Snorlax has a 50% chance to Paralyze.
